I've been avoiding most of the Who are you, what are you doing here and why do you keep looking at me? meme a la DrugMonkey that's been going around. Mostly because I comment on all of the blogs that I read and they can come here to find out all that I'm willing to divulge about myself. Most of those bloggers "know" who I am via my blog or my comments on theirs so I haven't felt compelled to comment on their meme posts redundantly.
And then it occurred to me: they know who I am, but I don't necessarily know who all of my readers are. (It also occurred to me that I've been running a little thin on blog fodder since things have been getting stupidly busy and sometimes unbloggable in real life - since I've got nothing interesting to say lately, I'm copping out and hoping that my readers do.)
So, folks, tell me about yourself. Even if you've never commented before. Especially if you've never commented before. I get a helluvalot more traffic than comments and it has to be coming from somewhere. You might as well stop lurking - I already know you're there (!!!) .
- Who are you?
- How'd you get here?
- What did you think you'd find here?
- What compelled you to hang around?
- What else is interesting about you?

This sounds like the "National De-Lurking Day" we used to do...wonder why that hasn't been around the blogosphere. Hmmm.
Well, to answer your questions. I am a Ph.D. candidate in history at a large university in the U.S. I most likely found your site through one of the other blogs I read, but I don't recall which one. I've only known about your existence for a few months. I've been blogging for 3 years now and am trying (perhaps unsuccessfully) to stay pseudo-anonymous.
I keep you in my feed reader because I am interested in learning about other academics, especially those who are in different fields.
Umm...as far as other interesting things about me, I am obsessed with TV, have a cute fluffy white dog (Elle), and wish I had the money to travel and eat out more. Boy does being a poor grad student suck, at times, but I am working on being more optimistic.
I think you know me, AA - but in case: (1) Super-rad technician, (2) MassivePharma employee, (3) happily married for nine years (today!). How'd I get here? Err.. I forget. I like hanging out here 'cause you're funny, & I like funny.
I also collect beer labels - is that interesting or silly? I'm up to 457 in my collection.
I am here because I <3 you! Plus its fun to commiserate with other students!
I'm a PhD student in Astronomy, and I totally don't remember how I found your blog. Probably from someone's blog roll. I stay because you're interesting and funny!
I am here because I am YOUR EVIL SCIENCE TWIN. You know it's true. It's nice to know someone's going through pretty much the same thing at the same time.
I'm a PhD student in mechanical engineering, and most likely found my way here through various and sundry link-clicking. Interesting bit about me? Hmm. I own my own power tools and welding equipment, which I keep in the dorm (and hide on fire-hazard-inspection days).
Umm... Well, you've been to my blog, but in case you forgot ;-) I'm a 5th year phd student in biochemistry. I think I got here from one of the other blogs I read (or maybe a comment on my blog?). I think you're funny and I enjoy commiserating with other students. I'm not very interesting. I do make my own beer, though.
Well, hello everyone. Welcome to the blog History Enthusiast - nice to meet you. I think I already "know" the rest of you but thanks for saying hi. :)
Oh, and Sci...I'm the evil twin, OK? Let's just get that straight.
totally do not remember how i got here. did you comment on my blog, maybe? at any rate, it's nice to commiserate with other endstage grad students and such. especially since the endstage grad students over here pretty much all suck.
i am JUST about to lose my mind finish my phd in teh awesome scienzes. i am flying to other major cities chasing down a postdoc. i am working on publications. i am writing a dissertation. i am making/remaking a job/defense talk. i am chasing down my mentor for last-minute guidance. i am a very demanding wife right now.
um, yeah. hah.
leigh - are you flying to my city for interviews by any chance. Because if you are we should totally meet up for a drink or seven. I know I need it, and it sounds like you do too. Hang in there.
I'm a postdoc in biomedical sciences who stumbled upon your blog through some other science blog (which I probably followed from yet another science-y blog). Don't know what I expected to find. Once upon a time, I could start an IV and run a pump on a fire engine.
it's a good thing for me that i don't have any interviews (by choice) in your even-hotter climate. that would kill me. needing to spend this last summer here pissed me off.
sadly, it's not a good thing for our prospects of meeting up for drinks. :( and yes, we both are in need of many drinks.
it would be awesome if we happened to be at a big generalist conference together. drinking and madness would ensue.
I'm an ex-neuroscience postdoc who bit the bullet when I admitted that my career was not going where I wanted it to go. Now I work in academic administration and try and (amongst many other things) try and help postdoc and sci-grad students prepare for careers outside the Tenure-Track. Most us won't get there, and building a good non-bench resume is vital. no time like the present to keep your shit in shape while you push for your dream!
Hmmm...I've been blogging for 5+ years now (the current version of my blog is newish though. the old was closed to due content/anonymity issues). Can't remember how I found you, but likely through mutual blogmates in our little corner of the academic blogosphere. I keep coming back cos you're funny as shit and I love watching young driven scientists fight their way to succeed. Takes guts and hard work and you've got that in spades.
Interesting thing about me? I train in Kickboxing, I can out drink (in beer) any man or woman alive, and I've never met a scientist with more tattoos and piercings than me :) Oh yeah, I play(ed) drums in rock bands for years too.
Edit word verification: molycylo: the next "must have" piece of lab equipment? "Do you have those peptides yet?, Oh they're in in the molycyclo? Good Give it another hour then purify..."
(1) Canadian. Environmental epidemiologist. Handed in my dissertation last week.
(2) A horse blog. I generally don't read academic blogs, but I was curious.
(3) Hoped to find another horsey academic.
(4) Interesting observations about stuff.
(5) Nothing at all.
